Sometimes you have to wonder how actors can eat anything at all.....Say you’re the kid in Matilda, and you have to shoot the scene where you eat the chocolate cake. Cool right? I mean, what’s not to like about chocolate cake? Unless you’re allergic to chocolate, or cake…still.

But if you’re shooting that scene, then it’s not just one slice of cake, or even one cake! There’ll be multiple cakes and multiple slices, some no doubt edible and some not (prop cakes, for display purposes only) never-the-less, that’s an awful lot of cake! And you have to eat it. Again, and again, and again. First take, second take, wide, reverse, close up, bite after bite after bite. I’d be surprised if that kid can even look a chocolate cake full on and not throw up.

Today, our two actors Denis Menochet and Barry Keoghan, ate a lot of boiled eggs. Too many eggs it turns out. It was a bit of a Cool Hand Luke meets Bridesmaids moment. Sexy.

Which got me thinking about all the characters out there who’ve had a thing about a certain food-stuff, or who never stopped eating, like Joey in Friends – can Matt Le Blanc even eat pizza now? But I digress.  Like true pros, Denis and Barry tucked in to their meal of eggs and milk, followed by eggs, followed by milk, followed by eggs, followed by... Their characters loved it – I mean, I’ve never seen a man and a boy enjoy blue eggs and milk quite as much. Truly. The actors however. Not so much.

This possibly explains a lot about Hollywood and the general thin-ness of the population. Too many takes. It can put someone right off their grub…

…I’d quite like some cake right now.
